Shopping for olive oil can be a daunting task! Here are 4 quick tips on shopping for extra virgin olive oil to make sure you’re purchasing a high-quality product.
1. Dark Glass
Our oil is deliberately bottled in dark packaging. This dark green color helps protect the oil from light and prolongs its shelf life. Extend it further by storing your extra virgin olive oil in a dark, cool place, away from your cooktop and oven.
Extra virgin olive oil is simply the juice extracted from the fruit of an olive tree. Ensure that the ingredients list on the oil you’re purchasing is 100% extra virgin olive oil and nothing else.
3. Harvest Date
Since olives are pressed into extra virgin olive oil immediately after they are harvested, the harvest date gives you an idea of when the oil was made. Unlike wine, olive oil does not improve with age – the fresher the better! Unopened and stored properly, a good extra virgin olive oil will have a shelf life of about 2 years from the time of bottling (check for the Best-By date on the bottle). Once opened, we recommend consuming it within 2-3 months.
4. Certified Extra Virgin
There are a number of independent, third-party sensory and certification bodies for extra virgin olive oil. A bottle that bears their stamp is guaranteed to be extra virgin; it has met rigid chemical standards and has been deemed free from any sensory flaws by a panel of expert tasters.
