Mediterranean Diet May Prevent 1st Heart Attack

Eating a Mediterranean-style diet could lower your risk of suffering a heart attack for the first time or some other form of heart disease, a new Spanish Lower your Heart Attack Risk with Mediterranean Dietstudy suggests.

The study, in the American Journal of Epidemiology, followed more than 41,000 people in Spain. They were aged 29–69 and tracked for about a decade.

Researchers concluded that “Mediterranean diet adherence was associated with a significantly reduced coronary heart disease risk.” They added the results  support the diet’s “role in primary prevention of coronary heart disease in healthy populations.”

The Mediterranean diet regimen includes olive oil, fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts and seeds.

According to Reuters, high adherence to a Mediterranean diet was “associated with a 40% reduced risk of a first heart disease-related event.”

The news agency also said more research is needed to single out “key protective components of the Mediterranean diet and how these components confer their protective effects.”
